In an informative session to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Senate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that 63 of the 73 people who drowned in the Libyan ship disaster were Pakistani, and most of them feared dead.
The officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that the incident occurred on February 8, involving a boat with 73 people.
Among the survivors, two Pakistani nationals reported that the boat contained 63 Pakistani and 10 bangladesí. Most of the passengers on board were killed in the tragic accident, and most of the deceased Pakistani were from the districts of Kurram and Bajaor of the province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Rescue teams in Libya have recovered 10 bodies from a migrant boat that overturned on the coast, including 7 Pakistani.
The victims, six from the Kurram agency and one of Bajaur, were part of a group of 65 people who tragically drowned in the incident.
According to international news agencies, so far no survivors have been found.
The incident took place yesterday near the port of Marsa Dela, located northwest of the Libyan city of Zawiya.
During the rescue efforts in progress, the bodies of 10 passengers have been recovered, including 7 Pakistani. Six of the deceased were from the Kurram agency, and one came from Bajaur.
The reports indicate that at least 16 Pakistani were aboard the unfortunate boat, with continuous efforts to locate the remaining missing passengers
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed a deep sadness and repented for the tragic boat accident on the coast of Libya, which resulted in the loss of precious Pakistani lives. The prime minister ordered the relevant authorities to present a report on the incident.
A statement issued by Prime Minister’s office declared that the prime minister prayed for the elevation of the souls of the deceased and prolonged condolences to the families of the victims.
According to the statement, the prime minister has ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to quickly identify the deceased Pakistani and provide them with all the necessary assistance.
The prime minister also declared that strict measures would be taken against the people involved in human trafficking, adding that any negligence in this regard would not be tolerated. He stressed that the government is taking strong measures to combat human trafficking.
This development occurs after a similar incident last month, when a boat that transported 80 passengers overturned near Morocco.
The unfortunate vessel carried 86 migrants, with Moroccan authorities who reported that 66 passengers were Pakistani citizens. After the incident, 36 people were rescued by the Moroccan authorities.
