10 more killed in sudden floods as the monsoon spell intensifies throughout the country

Heavy rains and sudden floods have gained 10 more lives in all Pakistan in the last 24 hours as the monsoon spell intensifies, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) intended on Wednesday.

According to the NDMA, four deaths were reported in Punjab, four in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and two in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). Victims in Sindh, Baluchistan and Azad Kashmir were not reported.

Since the beginning of the monsoon season at the end of June, at least 252 people have lost their lives and almost 611 have been injured due to torrential rains, devastating floods and storms that have swept the country. The last number of deaths represents a significant increase in the previous position of 242 reported on Tuesday.

Punjab has registered the greatest number of deaths with 139 deaths, followed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with 60. Other severely affected regions include Sindh, which has reported 24 deaths and Baluchistan with 16.

In Islamabad, six people, including four children, were dragged by floods. Five deaths were also reported in Gilgit-Baltistan, while two deaths occurred in Kashmir Azad. According to the NDMA, the total toll includes 121 children, 46 women and 85 men.

Meanwhile, the administration of the Tarbela dam has issued a maximum alert as an important wave of floods approaches. The water level of the dam has reached 1,530 feet, near its capacity of 1,550 feet. Tickets are found in 333,000 Cusecs, with 332,600 cusecs discharged, and energy generation continues from 17 units that produce 3,500 MW.

In the midst of the worsening conditions, the KP Tourism Department has established a flood emergency response unit in tourist areas under the directives of Advisor Zahid Chanzeb. The tourist police and the 1422 aid line have been mobilized for public assistance.

The authorities warned that the rain is expected to continue until July 25, and urged the public to remain alert and avoid flood -prone areas.
