The incident occurred around 8 PM (local time) on two platforms while passengers waited to address trains to the city of Prayagraj, where the Hindu Maha Kumbh festival is being organized, according to media reports.
The dead number included 10 women and three children, local media said. The media showed images and videos of crowds that threw each other at the station, after the incident, while the police and the help teams worked to relieve the congestion.
The CM of Delhi, Atishi, who only uses a name, said in X that many of the victims were pilgrims who were going to attend Maha Kumbh.
The Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, and some other federal ministers confirmed the incident of Stampede in positions in X without revealing the number of deaths.
“Distressed by the stampede at the New Delhi train station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones,” said Modi in X.
India Interior Minister Amit Shah said in an X position that he had talked to the railroad minister and had a balance of the situation.
