KARACHI:

As a rarely implemented formality, the city administration imposed a ban on aerial firing on New Year’s Eve.

The ban is announced every year. At the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2024, the air of the port city resonated with the crackle of gunshots and the explosions of fireworks.

However, the aerial shooting madness left 29 people injured, some of them with lifelong disabilities. The police managed to arrest 38 people for aerial shooting and carrying weapons despite the imposition of Section 144.

This year too, Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi issued a notification imposing Section 144 in the city for two days, from December 31 to January 1, 2025.

This notification was intended to effectively ban aerial shooting and fireworks in the New Year. It instructs the police to take strict legal action against anyone who violates this prohibition.

Authorities have reminded the public that each year several people are injured or killed due to the reckless firing and mishandling of fireworks during celebrations.

The implementation of Section 144 seeks to ensure public safety and maintain peace in the city as residents welcome the New Year.
