- A ninth victim has been identified in the Salt Typhoon hack
- It is not believed that there are attackers lurking in the networks
- The White House wants to go on the ‘offensive’ against cyber threats
An ongoing assessment of the notorious Salt Typhoon hack has claimed that there are no longer hackers lurking in the breached networks and that all networks are now secure. This is the latest development in one of the most far-reaching cyberespionage campaigns in recent times, which has just claimed its ninth victim, the White House confirmed.
Large telecommunications companies such as AT&T and Verizon were among the victims of the campaign, with more than 100,000 routers compromised on a single network, allowing broad and complete access, allowing attackers to “geolocate millions of people and record phone calls.” at will.”
Fewer than 100 people are believed to have been personally affected by the attack, and the group specifically identified a small number of devices in the Washington DC area, with the goal of identifying and monitoring government targets to gather intelligence.
White House Remuneration
The attack prompted a response from the White House, as incoming President Trump vowed to go on the offensive. Officials say years of cyber defense have been ineffective, and Mike Waltz, the new national security adviser, has warned that the United States will have to “start asserting itself” on state actors that pose a threat.
While the investigation is ongoing, it seems unlikely that the scale of the intrusion will ever be fully understood, and damage limitation and subsequent risk mitigation are now a high priority.
“That’s why we look forward and say ‘let’s lock down this infrastructure’ and, frankly, let’s hold the Chinese accountable for this,” said Anne Neuberger, deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies.
“From what we’re seeing with respect to the level of cybersecurity implemented in the telecommunications sectors, those networks are not as defensible as they should be to defend against a capable, well-resourced, offensive cyber actor like China.”
