“We regret the death of the legend of Bulldog DD Lewis,” said Mississippi state in a publication on social networks. “A defensive SEC player of the SEC of 1967 of the year, played 13 years with the Dallas Cowboys, appeared in five Super Bowls, won two and was included in the Hall of Fame of Soccer College in 2001.”
Lewis was described as “one of the most underestimated players in the history of the franchise” in his obituary on the cowboys website. He was mostly relegated to a defense support role for Chuck Howley until the 1973 season, when he had two loose ball recoveries during the year.
He became one of the main supporters of the “Defense of Doomsday” by Tom Landry with Lee Roy Jordan. He quickly became an impact player. In the Super Bowl XII, he had a sack in the 27-10 victory over the Denver Broncos.
