Pakistan, Syria established a joint group to boost trade, agriculture, technological ties

Pakistan and Syria have pledged to expand bilateral cooperation in commerce, agriculture and technology, agreeing to form a joint work group to carry out a concrete collaboration.

At a meeting held in Islamabad on September 24, 2025, the Minister of National Food Security and Research of Pakistan, Rana Tanveer Hussain, and the Syrian ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Ramez Alraee, discussed the strengthening of ties in multiple sectors.

A central result of its discussion was the decision to establish a joint work group that will explore practical ways of collaboration, including modern agricultural practices, water resources management, capacities development and facilitation of agricultural trade.

The minister Rana Tanveer Hussain stressed that agriculture remains a high potential sector for both countries and emphasized Pakistan’s desire to deepen commercial and technical cooperation with Syria. He said that Pakistan is ready to share his experience in agricultural research, seed development and modern culture methods to help improve productivity.

In his comments, Ambassador Dr. Ramez Alraee expressed his gratitude for the support of Pakistan and reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to commit to Pakistan in mutually beneficial projects. He highlighted the improved collaboration opportunities not only in agriculture but also in the widest fields of trade and technology.

As part of the broader cooperation objectives, the two parties agreed to extend collaboration on science and technology, investment and industrial development. Both countries recognized the importance of joint research initiatives, the exchange of technical knowledge and the facilitation of the trade of agricultural goods and services.

This development is based on previous efforts from both countries to strengthen ties. In October 2023, Pakistan and Syria had already agreed to deepen cooperation in agriculture and commerce, pointing out continuity in their bilateral agenda. The current agreement demonstrates progress to carry out those commitments.

The establishment of the Joint Working Group will be expected to allane the way for Memorands of Understanding, Technical Exchanges and possibly joint companies in sectors of agriculture, commerce and technology. Both governments believe that creating an institutional mechanism will help guarantee the implementation of agreed projects and identify new areas of collaboration in a systematic way.

The initiative reflects a renewed impulse in the relations of Pakistan and Syria, with agriculture and technology that serve as anchor sectors. The effectiveness of the new working group will be critical to translate these intentions into tangible results for the benefit of both nations.
