The New York Yankees’ season ended in heartbreak for the 16th straight year on Wednesday night, as they were eliminated from the postseason in the American League Division Series.

The Toronto Blue Jays won the series in four games to advance to the American League Championship Series, wasting yet another season of Aaron Judge’s prime, who had by far his best postseason.

However, a perennial MVP candidate clearly isn’t enough to get over the hump, and Yankees three-time MVP and World Series champion Alex Rodriguez ripped his former club apart for the team they built this season.

“Aaron has been very classy. We’ve all been very consistent with that. Honestly, out of the entire organization, he’s the one guy that I would mention that has the least blame. I mean, he’s very talented,” Rodriguez said. “But for me, personally, it’s one of the worst roster constructions I’ve ever seen. You’ve got three left-handed catchers, five designated hitters, a first baseman in and out. It’s just a very, very difficult hand to play. [manager Aaron] Boone. And, honestly, they got exposed against a much better Blue Jays team.”

The Yankees were once again built to outperform their opponents, but were beaten to death by a thousand cuts from a Blue Jays team that had the best strikeout rate, highest batting average, and highest on-base percentage in the league. Meanwhile, the Yankees had the second-highest strikeout rate of any postseason team, trailing only the Detroit Tigers.

Down 2-1 in the top of the seventh, the Yankees got a tailor-made double play to get out of the inning, but Jazz Chisholm Jr. dodged it. Two runs later they scored, effectively putting the nail in the Yankees’ coffin. They brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth with Austin Wells flying out on the first pitch he saw to end the inning.

The Blue Jays finished the game with 12 total hits, to the Yankees’ six, and used eight different pitchers to get the job done.

Judge, a contender to win his third MVP in four years, was 13-for-26 (.500) in the postseason, making it the most hits he’s ever had in extra baseball. Among players with more than 15 at-bats, the next highest team average was Wells’ .227.
