- Canon rumors suggest the Canon EOS R6 III will land in November
- It could inherit a stabilized version of the 32MP sensor from the recent EOS C50
- There are also rumors of a Sony A7 V, which would be a direct rival
Canon could be about to announce a successor to the EOS R6 II, unsurprisingly called the EOS R6 III, if Canon’s latest rumors are true.
The current model has been an excellent Sony A7 IV all-round mirrorless camera since its launch in January 2023, but it was surpassed by the Nikon Z6 III in some areas, meaning Nikon currently has the best camera crown. However, that could all change with the new EOS R6 III, at least if the rumored features are anything to go by.
Canon Rumors suggests that sensor technology will come from the EOS C50, Canon’s recent baby cinema camera, including a stabilized version of the 32MP full-frame sensor, along with gate-open video recording.
The latter feature would set the EOS R6 III apart from its Nikon and Sony rivals, while the increase in resolution (the EOS R6 II takes 24MP stills) could see it surpass the Nikon Z6 III (also 24MP) in detail.
We may not have to wait long to know the details for sure. Canon Rumors makes it clear that the EOS R6 III will arrive on November 6, predicting a price of €2,899 (potentially around $3,100 / £2,600 / AU$5,000, given current market conditions).
Nikon could have some serious competition soon
If the EOS R6 III does indeed feature a 34.2MP sensor (delivering 32MP stills), it will presumably also shoot 7K video like the EOS C50 does. and the sensor is tilted to stabilize, up to 6.5 EV.
We can also expect Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with improved subject detection and burst shooting up to 40fps using the electronic shutter, with pre-capture, according to Canon Rumors.
For video fans, however, it’s the likelihood of open-door video recording that could set the EOS R6 III apart from the Z6 III and, indeed, the also-rumored Sony A7 V, another rival due to launch this year.
Sony’s potential A7 V will likely compete in terms of resolution with its rumored 33MP sensor and potentially its burst shooting performance as well, although it could fall short in several aspects for video.
It looks like Canon and Sony could end 2025 with a burst of key camera announcements. What do you think of the latest rumors? Which camera sounds more promising? Let me know in the comments below!
