The first screenshots of Rare’s canceled action-adventure game Always wild have appeared online, giving us a glimpse of the game’s progress before Xbox scrapped it.
The study behind sea of thieves revealed Always wild in 2019, but development on the game began in 2014. Expected to be a third-person fantasy adventure game, the project was in development for nearly 10 years before Xbox canceled it in June amid a series of layoffs and other game cancellations.
Now, a year after the project was shelved, the first screenshots of the game have given a glimpse of what the game could have been like if Rare had been able to complete development.
In these images, we can see a silver-haired character, presumably the same character that was shown in the few trailers for the game. They can be seen standing in a forest setting, exploring what appear to be ruins, with an art style not all that different from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Screenshots of the canceled #Everwild have been released via an artist who was on #Rare for the project. According to what was reported to MP1ST, these images will be from a version of the game quite close to its cancellation in June of this year. pic.twitter.com/FN9ci0VOMnOctober 12, 2025
There are also screenshots of the inventory, showing a “favorites” panel and a list of items, including “Figments”, which look like Breath of the wilds Korok, “tools”, “mosaics”, “seeds” and “plants”.
The Figments tab suggests a collectible feature that would have required the player to collect the small creatures for an unknown purpose, and Mosaics could suggest the same.
With the mention of tools, seeds, and plants, Everwild may have featured survival or life simulation game elements, which was speculated in 2023.
A settings menu also displays a variety of graphics settings, with several presets to choose from, as well as a “visual and performance option.”
When Always wild was cancelled, Xbox also announced that The Initiative and the studio’s work on perfect darkness would be closed, as well as an unannounced game of He ancient scrolls Online ZeniMax developer.
At the time, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, said in an email to Xbox staff that the job cuts “reflect a broader effort to adjust priorities and focus resources to prepare our teams for greater success within a changing industry landscape.”
Less than a month later, Xbox also canceled Avalanche Studios’ Contraband.
