Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice President Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Friday stressed that the need for negotiations is crucial for the stability of Pakistan, not just the PTI.
Speaking informally to the media during his appearance before an anti-terrorism court in Lahore on Friday, he stated that the country is at a critical juncture and talks must lead to a positive outcome, or the current government risks instability.
Qureshi stressed that the failure of these negotiations could endanger the future of democracy in Pakistan. “Negotiations are essential for the future of Pakistan, not for the PTI,” he said, adding: “If these talks do not yield positive results, this government will lose its balance.”
Furthermore, he commented that while the government’s ability to deliver on its promises remains to be seen, the priority should be to engage in dialogue first.
Addressing the plight of political prisoners, Qureshi reiterated that PTI founder Imran Khan has always cared about the interest of the nation. He highlighted that the PTI began the negotiation process with sincerity and with a focus on national well-being.
He also clarified that the PTI’s demands are fair and justified, urging the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26, 2022.
Furthermore, the PTI has called for the release of political prisoners, stating that political detainees, like all citizens, deserve the rights granted to them by law.
“Even people convicted of serious crimes can be granted bail, but we, who are politically innocent, have been denied bail and a fair trial for more than a year,” Qureshi said, asking for leniency for those imprisoned unfairly for political charges.
He noted that the PTI’s demands are within legal limits and it is vital that political prisoners receive due consideration.
On the broader political landscape, Qureshi reflected on his experience as a former foreign minister and said leaders like Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who hold key positions, must understand the country’s national priorities.
He reiterated that Pakistan’s nuclear program is essential for the defense and survival of the country and no political party should ever undermine it.
He concluded by expressing confidence that Pakistan will remain strong and determined, and urged political leaders to demonstrate wisdom during these turbulent times.
He also praised the recent release of prisoners, calling it a positive step forward. “The release of these prisoners is a welcome development,” Qureshi added, acknowledging the progress made.
