- Google will bring Chat to Meet starting in November 2025
- Document sharing is supported to create a more complete picture of the meeting.
- External participants can access the chat, but not outside the meeting window.
Google will soon integrate Meet and Chat more closely to ensure smoother communication, helping those who can’t make all the calls.
Chat will now collect messages, comments, links, and other shared resources during Google Meet calls and will be available to view after the meeting is closed.
The integration also brings some appreciated features to Meet, including emoji reactions and image/file sharing powered by Google Chat.
“Attendees can send pre-readings and other meeting materials to the group before the meeting in Google Chat, and these resources will be available in Google Meet throughout the call,” the company explained in a blog post.
Google explained that the change was designed to “improve post-meeting follow-up,” making it easier for attendees to summarize key points and display action items.
The Chat integration with Meet is only available to Google Workspace business and enterprise customers for now, not personal accounts. Enterprise Essentials/Essentials Plus/Starter/Standard/Plus, Business Starter/Standard/Plus, and Frontline Starter/Standard/Plus will be the first customers to gain access to the new feature.
Google also emphasized that the full rollout could take between 15 and 30 days, depending on the type of account.
It’s also worth noting that the feature is designed for scheduled calls in Google Calendar; Meeting hosts can still turn off the feature, but must do so before the call begins from the Google Calendar event video calling options screen.
“These messages… will respect the retention policies and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) rules that you have configured for Google Chat,” Google added.
For external attendees, chat is only available to participants during the call to maintain data security.
