A new leak has revealed that Google could be planning a massive AI update for Wear OS in the form of the Google Gemini.
Google Gemini launched in 2023 and is the search giant’s response to the global surge in interest in artificial intelligence models like ChatGPT. Now it appears that Google plans to replace the Google Assistant feature on many of the best Android smartwatches with a more capable AI assistant.
According to 9to5 Google, Gemini appears by name in the latest Google app beta code, specifically in a string (line of code) related to wearable devices. An expanded accompanying description reads: “Easily talk to get more done with an assistant on your watch, reinvented with Google AI.”
So when can we expect this update and what would it mean for Android handheld devices?
Will Google Gemini come to Wear OS?
Adding Google Gemini to Wear OS would be a pretty major update to Android’s wearable software, but there are a couple of unknowns. First of all, as 9to5 points out, there’s no guarantee that this code indicates an imminent or confirmed release of Gemini on Wear OS, but it’s a pretty big clue.
Google Gemini works on all the best Android phones, not just the company’s Pixel models. As such, we can probably expect Gemini to work on other Android smartwatches, not just the Google Pixel Watch 3 and its predecessors.
While it probably won’t collect sales pitches or render images on your wrist, the Google Gemini on Wear OS could significantly expand Google Assistant. Currently, the assistant offers information such as weather and traffic reports, and helps with reminders, tasks, alarms, and more.
