- ChatGPT now has an official app store for users
- OpenAI is inviting more developer submissions
- Great apps like Apple Music are now available
Over time, we’ve seen services and apps like Kayak and Photoshop integrate tightly into the ChatGPT interface, and now all those plugins are coming together in a new app store interface, with OpenAI also opening the doors for developers to contribute even more apps.
You can find the new app directory in ChatGPT’s main navigation panel on the web and mobile, along with existing links to all your previous projects and chats. Or you can just go directly to the ChatGPT application directory. There are a couple of categories to browse and a search tool if you need something specific.
This will all sound very familiar to anyone who’s used an app store before: click or tap any listing to see more details (including a privacy policy outlining how it handles your data) and to add the app to ChatGPT. Once this is done, you can request the services of the application by mentioning it or selecting it in its instructions.
In its call to developers for new apps, OpenAI says it’s looking for apps that “extend ChatGPT conversations by providing new context and allowing users to take actions.” As you might expect, there are guidelines that developers must follow and apps will need approval from OpenAI before appearing for ChatGPT users.
5 apps to try on ChatGPT
The best way to understand how these apps can extend ChatGPT’s capabilities is to try them out: We previously gave the Photoshop app a big thumbs up, so it’s a good app to start with if you haven’t used it yet. Sticking with design and graphics, the Canva app also gives you access to a host of visual tools within ChatGPT.
Apple Music is also worth checking out if you’re subscribed to the music streaming service: you can have ChatGPT create playlists for you and have the AI find songs based on specific themes and genres (much like the Spotify app). ChatGPT can already recommend tunes and mixes, but here you can add them directly to your Apple Music library.
Gmail isn’t the most exciting add-on, but it can make a big difference to your productivity if you have ChatGPT checking your inbox; in fact, it could reach inbox zero through some AI-powered summaries, highlights, and responses.
One more recommendation, for the road (or hiking trail): AllTrails is one of the best hiking apps in the business, and with this ChatGPT integration, you can ask questions and get advice based on data covering hundreds of thousands of hiking trails.
