Food inflation affects daily bets

RAWALPINDI:

By the end of 2025, staple foods like whole wheat roti, white flour roti, naan, paratha and even cups of tea hit new spending highs at tandoors, carts and small hotels in the twin cities, frequented by poor people hoping to find affordable food.

Workers who used to have roti with tea for Rs 100 to Rs 130 in commercial markets, transport hubs, workshops and large markets are now struggling to feed themselves. Last year, the price of flour mixed with red bran roti increased from Rs 14 to Rs 15, and its weight also reduced by 30 percent, so flour mixed with red bran roti became like papad and workers who used to eat one roti now have to eat two to feel full.

The price of white flour roti and yeast roti increased from Rs 20 to Rs 30, and the price of naan increased from Rs 25 to Rs 35. The prices of tandoori paratha and oiled naan have increased from Rs 40 to Rs 60. Prices of fried tawa paratha have also increased from Rs 40 to Rs 60. A cup of tea, which earlier cost Rs 70, has also been increased to Rs 100.
