- Verizon resolves outage
- It is offering affected customers a $20 credit.
- Even if you know it may not be equivalent to the pain that the interruption caused.
The dust is slowly settling on Verizon’s massive 2026 outage, and while we still don’t know what cut off cell service for Verizon customers in much of the United States, the company is addressing the issue with another public apology and a $20 credit for affected customers.
Yesterday we did not meet the standard of excellence that you expect and that we expect of ourselves. To help provide some relief, we are providing you with a $20 account credit that can be easily redeemed by logging into the myVerizon app to accept. On average, this covers several days of…January 15, 2026
Verizon wrote in an However, the credit doesn’t appear to be available yet and Verizon has told us it will send a text message when it becomes available; That, of course, assumes that your service has returned.
In fact, Verizon appears to be anticipating the response, adding in its post: “This credit is not meant to make up for what happened. No credit really can. But it is a way to recognize your time and show that we care about this.”
Do I think 20 dollars is enough? Probably not. A fairer amount might have been the cost of one month of 5G coverage for one month, so it would be in the $50 range. But I understand that could represent a huge expense for Verizon among millions of customers. Besides, that’s not my problem.
What is missing so far is an explanation of the root cause of the outage. There are numerous theories, including a cyberattack, bad code, and equipment failure. Any of them could explain the scale of the event (and its duration), but until Verizon does its post-mortem, we simply won’t know. That process can take hours, days or even weeks.
Meanwhile, any percentage of the nearly 150 million Verizon Mobile customers affected by the outage will have to decide whether $20 is enough to alleviate their frustration over lost communication opportunities, business, and even the inability to reach emergency services when they needed them.
If you’re currently looking for that $20 credit, you might want to wait a bit until the text message arrives from Verizon. Many people, including this Verizon customer, have yet to see any sign of the credit on their accounts. I even tried to participate in the chat about it and although it was automated, I didn’t know anything about the credit offer.
