- CD Project Red The Witcher 4 It is rumored to cost almost a billion dollars.
- A Polish analyst claims that development and marketing cost around $390 million, respectively.
- This comes shortly after the analyst claimed that new DLC is on the way for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The next installment of CD Projekt Red in the witcher The franchise is highly anticipated, with The Witcher 4 apparently determined to greatly improve the role-playing elements and realism of its predecessor, and it seems that the developer may be following in Rockstar Games’ footsteps with GTA 6.
And by that I mean there’s apparently a giant budget backing the RPG. As TweakTown reported, Polish analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski claims that The Witcher 4 It will cost CD Projekt Red around $800 million, of which $390 million will supposedly be spent on game development and the same amount on marketing. This is a rough estimate based on the conversion of PLN 1.4 billion to dollars.
This latest rumor comes from the same source that recently suggested that CD Projekt Red will release a new DLC expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in May 2026. While there is no clarification on this yet, it is worth noting that CD Projekt Red is rumored to be working on several projects, so it is not a far-fetched claim.
However, it’s a bigger leap to believe the claim about the size of the budget here. An expenditure of around 800 million dollars to The Witcher 4 would place the title within the same ballpark as important games like GTA 6, which due to speculation has accumulated costs of up to 2,000 million dollars in its production.
Still, it’s true that big releases like these have high expectations behind them (especially GTA 6), and obviously that will have a fairly high price in terms of production and marketing.
Most modern triple-A games have huge budgets, and a notable example is Insomniac. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which supposedly had a budget of $315 million.
This is a trend that has been going on for the last few years and shows no signs of slowing down.
Analysis: Big gaming budgets aren’t always justified
Big budgets don’t always mean big hits in the gaming industry.
Take, for example, the case of Concord by Firewalk Studios (certainly not a single-player game, but certainly eye-opening in terms of being a high-profile flop). This is said to have cost 400 million dollars and in case you didn’t know, Concord It was a massive failure that led to its closure two weeks after its launch, and the closure of the developer responsible.
This is just one of many examples of massive budgets being wasted, and while I doubt this will happen with CD Projekt Red The Witcher 4I still have some concerns, especially after Cyberpunk 2077The disastrous launch.
The only developer I’ve seen consistently back their production costs is Rockstar Games, with critically acclaimed releases like Red Dead Redemption 2 and of course GTA 5.
