Los Angeles-based Capital Group, one of the world’s largest investment firms with more than $2.3 trillion in assets under management, has become one of Metaplanet’s largest shareholders.
Based in Japan, Metaplanet was an investor in the hospitality industry that became notable over the past year for its bitcoin (BTC) treasury strategy modeled along the lines of Michael Saylor’s MicroStrategy (MSTR). Capital Group’s increased stake was mentioned in an X post by Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovic.
Metaplanet owns 1,762 BTC and is the 15th publicly traded company to own bitcoins. Since adopting a bitcoin treasury strategy in April 2024, its share price has risen more than 1,700%.
Capital Group is also the second-largest shareholder in Bitcoin development company MicroStrategy (MSTR), owning 18.4 million shares, or more than an 8% stake in the company. Only founder and CEO Michael Saylor owns a larger stake. Other major investors include Vanguard Group, Morgan Stanley and Jane Street Group.
