- Nvidia executive Andrew Bell has been talking about Shield TV
- The streaming device was first launched in 2015.
- Updates continue and we may get a new model.
Ten years after it was first released, the Nvidia Shield TV streaming box has gained a loyal following and the devices continue to receive updates, and one of Nvidia’s executives has hinted that a new hardware update could eventually see the light of day.
In a detailed Ars Technica report, Nvidia senior vice president of hardware engineering Andrew Bell says he would “love” to see a new Shield TV box one day, and that it’s something that’s not completely out of the question at Nvidia.
“We’re always playing around in the labs, trying to discover new things,” Bell says. “We’ve played with new concepts for Shield and we’ll continue to play, and if we find something we’re really excited about, we’ll probably give it a try.”
The article covers the entire history of the Nvidia Shield TV series, from the launch of the first model in 2015. Since then, we have seen updated models appear in 2017 and 2019, and the 2019 version of the Android gaming and streaming box is still on sale.
Updates will keep coming
According to Bell, the 2019 Nvidia Shield TV is still selling well, despite its age. One of the reasons for this is likely that users know that Nvidia is committed to rolling out new software patches to keep the device up to date and secure.
Bell says that from the beginning, when he and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang came up with the idea for the Android-based streaming device, maintaining the full range of compatible devices over the years was a priority.
“Early on, when we were building Shield TV, we decided we were going to do it for the long haul,” Bell says. “Jensen and I had a discussion and it was, ‘how long do we want to support this?’ And Jensen said, ‘As long as we live.'”
Bell reveals that people are still purchasing Shield TV 2019 and that there are no plans to stop releasing updates “any time soon.” That will encourage Nvidia Shield TV fans, as will the suggestion that new hardware may possibly appear.
