- Fitbit users have more time to switch to Google accounts
- New deadline is May 19 (delayed from February 2)
- Switching is quick and easy through the Fitbit app
Not long after Google bought Fitbit in 2021, it became clear that Fitbit accounts would be absorbed into Google accounts, but if you haven’t made the switch yet, Google is giving you a little more time to do so.
According to the official support page (via The Verge), the lights will go out for Fitbit accounts on May 19, 2026: after that time, your Fitbit account will no longer work with Fitbit devices. The deadline to download your data is a little later, July 15, 2026.
Previously, Google had said that Fitbit accounts would stop working on February 2, which is Monday. That in itself was an extension, because the original plan was for everyone to migrate to Google accounts sometime during 2025.
Google hasn’t said why the deadline has been extended, but presumably there are technical challenges or there are still a substantial number of users who haven’t done it yet, and Google doesn’t want them to miss out.
How to change
When you transfer your Fitbit account information to a Google account of your choice, all your fitness data and stats will transfer and the app will remain the same. Basically, you’re simply changing the email address you use to log in.
If you’re not happy with Google having your health and fitness stats, you can export the data from your Fitbit account and then request that your account be closed. Google will delete all Fitbit accounts that have not been migrated by July 15.
You can find complete instructions for transferring your Fitbit account to a Google Account in the Google Support Center. Basically, you can do this from the Settings page in the Fitbit app for Android or iOS and simply follow the on-screen instructions.
The process appears to be fairly simple and there have been no widespread reports of users having problems switching between Fitbit and Google. The move has certainly been smoother than the Gemini for Home update that is currently rolling out.
