Lola Young’s first Grammy win came with raw emotion, some choice words, and an unforgettable moment that perfectly matched the title of her winning song.
The 25-year-old British singer-songwriter took home Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2026 Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 1, for her smash hit. Messybeating nominees Justin Bieber for DAISIESSabrina Carpenter by male childLady Gaga by Disease and Chappell Roan The Metro.
When Charli xcx announced her name, Young jumped out of her seat, briefly ran in the wrong direction, looked at her tablemates in disbelief, and then ran onto the stage, visibly stunned by the victory.
Once there, he made it clear that he had planned nothing.
“I don’t have any speech prepared. Obviously I don’t. It’s Messydo you know what I mean? he told the crowd, drawing laughter.
Overwhelmed with emotion, she added: “I don’t know what to say. Thank you very much. You can tell by my damn face. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”
After composing herself, Young expressed her gratitude by saying, “I am very, very grateful for this,” before ending her speech on a personal note: “Nick [Shymansky]We did it, mom. I love you.”
The Grammy win marks a powerful comeback moment for Young, who faced serious challenges just months earlier.
In September 2025, he collapsed on stage at the All Things Go festival. At the end of that month, he announced that he would be canceling all upcoming performances, explaining that he would “be gone for a while.”
At the time, he apologized directly to fans, writing that he was “very sorry for letting anyone down” and adding that “it hurts me more than you know.”
She also asked for patience, saying, “I really hope they give me a second chance once I’ve had some time to work on myself and come back stronger.”
Young kept a low profile for months before making his first public appearance at Lily Allen’s Christmas party in December 2025. The next day, he shared an update with his fans, thanking them for their support.
“I just wanted to express gratitude to everyone who has given me time and space to get myself together and get my head in a better place,” she wrote on Instagram.
“I have felt so much love and support from all of you, and you have helped me more than you ever will now.”
Standing on the Grammy stage a few weeks later, emotional and unapologetic, Young’s unscripted and slightly chaotic acceptance speech seemed appropriate.
For an artist whose defining success is called Messythe moment was anything but polished, and that’s exactly what made it resonate.
