- Resonant control does not use generative AI content “at all”
- Remedy interim CEO Markus Mäki confirmed there is “varying interest” in the technology at the company
- He adds that the company is following the progression of AI to see if something can be used “ethically” that can “add value to the player.”
Remedy’s interim CEO Markus Mäki has confirmed that the studio’s next big title, Resonant controldoes not use generative AI. However, he admits that there is interest in the technology at the company.
Speaking during Remedy’s most recent earnings Q&A (via Game Developer), Mäki discussed the divisive technology that has been seeping into all facets of the games industry in recent years.
“I’m a big believer in player value, so I make things that really add something to the gaming experience and the player experience. I’m also a big believer in the creative people on our team and knowing the best ways to add that value. There’s varied interest across different trades at Remedy to investigate these AI tools,” Mäki said.
Although there is “varied interest” in these tools, Mäki was firm in confirming that the Control The sequel doesn’t feature any use of Gen-AI, but the company is following its progression to see if something can be used “ethically” that “adds value to the player.”
“I can say that, for example, Resonant control does not use generative AI content at all. But making far-reaching promises about the future is quite difficult at the moment,” the interim CEO said.
“We actively follow the development [of generative AI tools] and see if there is something that is really ethically in the right place and something that can add value to the player and that our teams want to use. “So of course it will be an easier decision.”
It is increasingly difficult to ignore the presence of Gen-AI in the video game industry.
The 2026 State of the Gaming Industry Report (via GameSpot) states that 52% of game developers believe generative AI is a threat to the industry, up from 30% last year, while only 7% said it has had a positive impact.
One anonymous game developer even told the report’s pollsters, “I’d rather leave the industry than use generative AI.”
There are obvious ethical reasons against using AI for creative projects that impact real artists, but also the threat of layoffs that game developers face as companies shift their focus to the technology.
Its use has even caused an increase in the cost of RAM, which has had a negative impact on hardware stock.
In other related news, Sony would have obtained a new patent for AI-generated podcasts in which its PlayStation characters would give voice.
Last month, it patented new artificial intelligence technology that will take control of PlayStation games when the player gets stuck, and even a touchscreen controller patent that doesn’t include buttons or joysticks.
