The federal government increased petrol prices by Rs 3.47 per liter and diesel prices by Rs 2.61 per liter during the fortnight to the end of January, due to rising international oil prices driven by US sanctions. United with oil exports to China and India.
According to a notification issued by the Finance Ministry late on Wednesday night, the price of petrol increased from Rs 252.66 to Rs 256.13 per liter and that of high-speed diesel from Rs 258.34 to Rs 260.95. rupees per liter.
“The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has calculated the consumer prices of petroleum products taking into account the fluctuations in the international market during the last fortnight,” the official notification reads. The increase is attributed to rising global prices, driven by US sanctions on oil exports to China and India.
US President Joe Biden’s administration last week imposed its most extensive sanctions package yet targeting Russia’s oil and gas revenues. As a result of these sanctions, the price of crude oil exceeded $81 per barrel, the highest price since August 2024.
Last time, the government increased the price of gasoline by 0.56 reais per liter on New Year’s Eve during the first half of 2025. The latest prices for petroleum products would take effect immediately and remain in effect until on January 31.
