Scottie Scheffler finished just behind Rory McIlroy in the Masters this weekend, just one shot behind the back-to-back green jacket winner.

Scheffler took issue with the conditions at Augusta National Golf Course and expressed as much after concluding the fourth round of the tournament Sunday night, telling reporters that he was not “in charge of the course setup.”

“I would have liked it to have been a little more even in terms of firmness on Thursday and Friday. I was a little surprised how soft things were on Friday afternoon, especially when it was already late. But the weather changes too, like it was a little windy on Thursday,” he said via Golf.com.

“So who knows, it’s just part of the game. We play an outdoor sport, and you don’t know how the conditions are going to change, especially the course conditions. Overall, like I said, just Friday for me, getting out early, not being able to shoot a round under par, that definitely affected my chances. I think I started the weekend maybe 12 behind, so being within one was a pretty good run.”

Scheffler said his second round “probably hurt the most” his chances of winning the tournament. That day he shot a 74 with four bogeys before returning to contention.

“We went out Thursday afternoon in some of the most challenging conditions we’ve had all week,” he said. “I didn’t see a lot of birdies on Thursday afternoon, so coming out on Friday, whatever they did to the greens to soften them up, they did some things, and I just couldn’t take advantage of that that happened early on Friday.

“And then you saw the avalanche of birdies that Rory and Cam Young and a bunch of guys made on Friday at the end of the day, and I think I finished maybe two over par on Friday. So that day was probably the one that hurt me the most in terms of my chances of winning.”

Scheffler made 12 birdies and two eagles in the tournament. But he also settled for five bogeys in the four rounds.
