More than 200,000 thermal socks sold at Costco recalled after reports of burns

Heated socks sold at Costco that have been linked to more than a dozen serious burns are being recalled because they may pose a hazard, a federal regulatory agency said Thursday.

The agency, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, said in the recall notice that the socks, branded 32 Degrees and powered by batteries, can cause burns due to the heat, friction, moisture and pressure that can occur when worn “during high-intensity activities.”

The socks were manufactured in China and imported by David Peyser Sportswear, a New York-based company, according to the recall notice.

The Product Safety Commission said 14 people had reported being injured, and of those, 13 said they suffered first- or second-degree burns. The heat sensors in the socks are concentrated in the forefoot area.

About 208,000 pairs are being recalled, the commission said. Costco and 32 Degrees did not respond to requests for comment Friday.

The socks are made from a cotton, polyester and spandex blend. They cost between $30 and $46 and are rechargeable, with a battery life of up to eight hours. Included in the recall are black medium, large and extra-large socks sold from August 2025 to March 2026.

On its website, the company, which was voluntarily recalling the product, said the socks were sold exclusively through Costco and not directly from the brand. Customers should return the socks immediately and request a refund from Costco, the company said in its recall notice.
