Punjab extends Section 144, maintains ban on flying drones outdoors

The restriction on outdoor drone flying remained in place across the province for another 30 days, according to the notification.

The Punjab government has expanded the enforcement of Section 144 across the province, maintaining a complete ban on flying drones outdoors, according to a notification issued on Sunday.

According to the Department of the Interior, the restriction on flying drones in open spaces had been extended for another 30 days and would remain in effect until May 25. The measure was originally imposed for security reasons.

“Considering the overall security situation, it is imperative to ensure safety of people and protection of facilities and buildings against any potential threat or adverse activity,” the notification said.

The order emphasized that the restrictions were extended in the “broader interest of public safety, peace and tranquillity”, adding that there were “sufficient grounds” to continue the application of Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, to prevent any disturbance of public peace and safeguard lives and properties.

However, the ban does not apply to the limited use of small drones during indoor events. The authorities clarified that small drones can be used inside wedding halls and tents for coverage purposes.

“Safe use of such drones in a limited and confined indoor area shall be the responsibility of the organiser,” the notification said.

The restriction also exempted the use of drones by law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The Punjab government directed the administration and police to ensure strict implementation of the order during the implementation period.
