Schmeichel rose to prominence as a goalkeeper and left a legacy throughout a historic 20-year playing career that saw him play for Denmark and Manchester United in the Premier League. His early career spanned several Danish clubs (Gladsaxe-Hero, Hvidovre and Brøndy) before moving to United in 1991. He also played for Sporting CP in Portugal before returning to the Premier League with spells at Aston Villa and Manchester City.
While at Manchester United, he won 15 trophies and helped the club captain win the 1999 UEFA Champions League final, helping the Red Devils complete the historic treble.
