- Budget Cybertruck was quickly discontinued due to poor sales
- NHTSA has detailed a manufacturing defect that could cause problems
- Tesla is now recalling all 173 Cybertruck RWD models to fix it
Tesla made a lot of fanfare about the Cybertruck RWD trim level, which debuted about a year ago and was pitched as a more affordable entry to the brand’s divisive electric pickup truck.
Unfortunately, it was sold in very limited quantities, perhaps due to the fact that Tesla removed most of the Cybertruck’s best parts to keep the cost down.
Now, a recent recall highlights how little the company sold, cementing the fact that many critics feel the model is one of the biggest failures in automotive history.

Thanks to holes in the brake rotors that are prone to cracking due to “road disturbances,” NHTSA has highlighted that cracking could eventually cause the 18-inch steel wheels to separate from the rotor itself.
It’s not something you want to hear, especially when the vehicle is advertised as a rugged and capable off-roader. As a result, Tesla has recalled all 173 Cybertruck RWD models for repair.
That solution involves new bushings, redesigned rotors, and a higher friction coating on the lug nuts to improve torque retention under heavy loads, according to Motor Trend.
Tesla will make the necessary changes free of charge and owners have already been notified about the recall.
Analysis: Recall reveals shocking low sales
Tesla rarely releases exact numbers for certain models, with models like the Cybertruck and the now-defunct Model S and Model That sum also includes the first low-volume versions of the Semi truck.
It means the public never really understood why Tesla revealed the RWD Cybertruck and then quickly abandoned it.
But with only 173 sold, it quickly becomes clear why that decision was made.
