Nepra has scheduled a hearing for May 19, after which a final decision on reparation will be made.
To cover the losses, successive governments increased electricity prices and imposed a surcharge of Rs 3.23 per unit to pay off debts incurred by power distribution companies, raising power prices to the highest levels in the region. Photo: archive
ISLAMABAD:
Power consumers across Pakistan, including those served by K-Electric, are likely to receive a significant relief of Rs 63.94 billion under the quarterly tariff adjustment mechanism.
The energy distribution companies (DISCO) submitted a petition to the National Electrical Energy Regulatory Authority (Nepra), requesting a tariff adjustment for the first quarter of calendar year 2026 (January to March).
Nepra has scheduled a hearing for May 19, after which a final decision on reparation will be made. The petition outlines several components contributing to the proposed reduction. A significant decline of Rs 36,837 crore has been recorded in capacity charges for the January-March period.
The DISCOs have sought a reduction of Rs 11.24 billion in system usage charges and fees of market operators and a reduction of Rs 23.51 billion in the incremental unit account, which has also contributed to the overall relief amount.
Officials said the cumulative impact of these adjustments could translate into a substantial financial benefit for electricity consumers across the country. However, actual relief for consumers will depend on Nepra’s determination after the scheduled public hearing.
