If you weren’t a fan of all the ways Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 You left the long-running strategy franchise, so developer Firaxis Games is preparing the update for you.
The Test of Time update will be released on May 19, 2026 and is a massive overhaul that appears to be designed to address complaints many players had with the game. The biggest addition is the ability to play as a single civilization for an entire game.
Known as time-tested civilizations, these civilizations can use a new syncretism mechanic to adopt unique units or infrastructure from others, or choose to strengthen their existing traits with Affirmation. Rather than replacing the existing civilization change mechanics, which allow you to change things between ages, this will apparently exist as an option alongside them.

Victories are also being completely reworked with a new system that aims to offer more viable paths to success. In addition to this, the legacy routing system, which gave you different objectives to pursue in each era, is being replaced with more dynamic Triumphs.
These challenging tasks are completely optional and relate to the game’s six attributes: militaristic, cultural, scientific, economic, diplomatic and expansionist.
These big mechanical changes are joined by a host of new content, including a new map, map generation updates, a selection of new narrative events, biome updates, and a host of balance changes, as well as interface updates. Players will even get a new leader for free!
More information about the update will be released in the coming weeks, and a developer stream will take place on May 13.
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 is now available for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
