Kerry Needham, the mother of a boy called Ben Needham, who disappeared in 1989 in Greece, has now made a surprise turn.
Needham, the mother of the British boy, spoke publicly that after a UK police officer told her she would no longer pursue her son’s case, she was heartbroken.
Ben, originally from Sheffield, was 21 months old when he disappeared on the Greek island of Kos in the summer of 1991.
He was staying in a country house with his grandparents.
At the time, her mother worked in a hotel on the island and although 35 years have passed, she is still searching for answers.
Needham, in an interview with The mirrorHe said South Yorkshire Police’s major crime unit has informed him it will no longer investigate the case, leaving Greek police responsible for future investigations.
“This is devastating news,” he told the outlet. He added: “The case will now fall solely to the Greek authorities. If this happens, I feel I may as well abandon the search for Ben because the Greek police have always wanted this case to go away.”
In a separate development, SYP said Greek authorities “have complete primacy over the investigation” but continue to “allocate resources to Ben’s case, in the form of a family liaison officer and a detective acting as a single point of contact,” according to the independent.
Needham is now urging people to contact SYP and First Minister Sir Keir Starmer to ask that the case not be closed forever until he gets answers.
She said: “No parent should stop looking for their child and I never will.”
