ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced holidays on the occasion of Eid ul Adha, a Cabinet Division notification said on Wednesday.
“The Prime Minister has had the pleasure of declaring May 26, 27 and 28, 2026 (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) public holidays on the occasion of the [Eid ul Adha]”, reads the notification.
Pakistan would celebrate Eid ul Adha on May 27, the Ruet-i-Hilal Central Committee (RHC) moon sighting committee announced on May 17 after the crescent of the month of Zilhaj was sighted.
The announcement was made after a committee meeting held at the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in Karachi, chaired by Maulana Azad.
In a press conference, President de Ruet stated that credible testimonies of Moon sightings have been received in various parts of the country.
“It has been decided by consensus that the first Zilhaj 1447 AH will be on Monday, May 18 and Eid ul Adha will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 27,” he said.
Eid ul Adha, also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” commemorates the Quranic story of Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH)’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah, a test of faith that was divinely interrupted and replaced by a ram.
Additionally, the occasion is celebrated with prayers, family gatherings and charitable events, including the ritual sacrifice of cattle, the meat of which is distributed to family, friends and the underprivileged.
