American tennis star Coco Gauff’s trip to Roland Garros for her first match at the French Open took a terrifying turn.

“We had a little car accident on the way there today,” Gauff told TNT Sports on Tuesday with a laugh after defeating fellow American Taylor Townsend in the first round in Paris.

Gauff continued to recount the eventful trip to Roland Garros, saying: “We hit a pole. You could feel the impact. I spilled my juice all over the car.”

In the end, Gauff had to find alternative transportation to get to Roland Garros. Once she arrived safely on the iconic red clay, she advanced to the second round with a straight-sets victory over Townsend, 6-4, 6-0, to set up Thursday’s showdown with Egypt’s Mayar Sherif.

“The car wasn’t drivable. So we ended up taking a taxi,” Gauff added.

Gauff started her match earlier than expected when there was a forfeit in another match on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

“And right before I went on the court, my dress got stuck, so my physical therapist was in the bathroom trying to help me get it off,” Gauff said. “It was an eventful day. But I feel like when that happens, it doesn’t allow you to think too much about the game. I’m happy to be here in one piece.”
