The Government compensates for the oil relief with a tax increase

ISLAMABAD:

The federal government has revised prices of petroleum products, increasing kerosene rates and adjusting tax structures on gasoline and high-speed diesel (HSD).

According to official documents, kerosene oil prices have increased by Rs 8.70 per litre, taking the new price to Rs 280.70 per liter compared to the previous price of Rs 272.

Meanwhile, the government has significantly increased the tax on petrol by Rs 24.74 per litre. The tax has been increased from Rs 91.34 to Rs 116.08 per liter, effectively offsetting any possible relief for consumers.

On the other hand, the tax on HSD has been reduced by Rs 24.34 per litre, from Rs 68.93 to Rs 44.59 per litre. This adjustment has helped maintain the current diesel price despite broader pricing pressures.

Officials said the tax restructuring is part of the government’s fiscal management strategy, although it has resulted in limited relief for gasoline consumers amid continued inflation concerns.

The government on Friday reduced the price of petrol by Rs 4 per liter and kept the HSD price unchanged for the next week, according to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division of the Ministry of Power.

It stated that the ex-depot price of petrol was reduced to Rs 377.78 per liter from Rs 381.78 per litre, while the price of HSD remained unchanged at Rs 380.78 per litre.

The latest adjustment came after a series of fuel price revisions in response to fluctuations in international oil markets. Last week, the government reduced petrol and diesel prices by Rs 22 per liter, providing significant relief to consumers amid changes in global energy prices.

Gasoline is used by motorcycles and cars. HSD is widely used in the transportation and agriculture sectors.
