As monarch, King Charles holds many prestigious honors and has been immortalized in history in various forms of art and collectibles.
For the first time in centuries, a queen consort is being honored after The Royal Mint approved a new ‘Queen Camilla’ coin. This is a surprising turn of event, as only the reigning monarch of the time and not his spouses appears on the coin.
While this is not a historical first, it will be the first UK coin to recognize the Queen Consort since the Tudors.
Elizabeth II had wanted her successor, Charles III, Camilla to hold the title of Queen Consort and not “Queen.” However, it was one of the first changes Charles made to remove the word ‘Consort’ from Camilla’s honorifics when addressing her in public.
The new coin will celebrate 500 years of the Crown and feature a Tudor rose on one side and then the crowned royal figures of King Charles and Queen Camilla on the other side.
The design is inspired by King Henry VIII, who featured the initials of his first three wives on Crown coins.
A coin expert who goes by the name ‘Christopher Collects’, shared that as collectors, they are always looking for coins that “tell a story beyond their face value.”
“This release combines true history, Tudor inspiration and a genuinely rare constitutional moment.”
