World Cup schedule for Thursday, June 25
Ecuador vs. Germany
Germany and Ecuador meet on Thursday at the New York New Jersey Stadium in a Group E match where both teams face very different realities.
Entering the tournament, Ecuador was seen as a team capable of advancing deep into the knockout stages. In qualifying for the World Cup in CONMEBOL’s single-table format, Ecuador finished second, only behind Argentina. Their defense was historically good, as they conceded just five goals, including just one in their last 11 games.
After two games without a win, Ecuador faces a scenario in which it needs to defeat a powerful German team just to advance.
Curacao vs. Ivory Coast
Despite being the smallest country both in size and area ever rate For the World Cup, tiny Curacao enters its final Group E match on Thursday with a chance to advance to the round of 32. Of course, it will be extremely difficult as it will require a victory over a very good Ivory Coast team, but this tournament has been full of surprises and has shown that anything can happen.
Tunisia vs. Netherlands
The Netherlands will look to secure first place in Group F when they face Tunisia on Thursday at Kansas City Stadium. The Netherlands come into the game with four points and are flying high after a wonderful 5-1 victory over Sweden on Saturday. On the other hand, Tunisia is in complete disarray and has already been eliminated.
The Netherlands comes into this match tied on points and goal difference with Japan at the top of the group. Since Japan and the Netherlands tied in their matchup, first place could come down to goal difference if both teams win the final.
Japan vs Sweden
There is a lot at stake for Japan and Sweden when the two teams meet on Thursday at Dallas Stadium in Group F. Japan comes into the match with four points, while Sweden has three points. The winner of this match is assured of a place in the round of 16, and possibly even the group title, depending on how the Netherlands (also on four points) fare against Tunisia.
Japan comes into this match as deserved favorites and can win the group if they defeat Sweden and the Dutch stumble. Even if both teams win, Japan can win Group F if their margin of victory is greater than the Netherlands’ margin.
Türkiye vs. the United States
Co-host United States will face Türkiye on Thursday at Los Angeles Stadium in the Group D final for both teams. The United States already clinched the group title after winning its first two matches by multiple-goal margins and outscoring its opponents 6-1. Meanwhile, Türkiye have lost their first two matches and are eliminated. After this match, they will end their disappointing World Cup campaign.
Paraguay vs. Australia
Second place in Group D and a guaranteed place in the round of 32 are at stake when Paraguay and Australia meet on Thursday at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. Both teams lost to the United States and defeated Türkiye to reach three points. But Australia has an advantage in the tiebreaker on goal difference and will take second place if the teams tie.
Based on the teams’ performances in their first two matches, this match has no clear favorites and is difficult to predict.
