The Federal Government has eliminated the general director of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Ahmed Ishaque Jehangir and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) General Inspector of Police Akhtar Hayat, citing administrative failures, the authorities confirmed on Monday.

Jehangir has been reallocated as Special Service Officer (OSD) in the establishment division, said Express News.

Its elimination occurs in the midst of the growing concerns about human trafficking, with sources that link the decision with the slow response of the FIA to the tragedies of migrant boats.

Pakistan has witnessed multiple mortal migrant incidents in recent months, including the overturning of a boat off the Moroccan coast earlier this month, which killed at least 50 people, most of them Pakistani.

The FIA has faced criticism for its management of such cases, with reports that suggest that the prime minister approved Jehangir’s dismissal due to the slow rhythm of the investigations.

Meanwhile, the government also eliminated the KP police chief, Akhtar Hayat, appointing Zulfiqar Hameed instead.

The authorities cited the deterioration of the security situation in the province, particularly the increase in violence in Kurram and the application of the law does not maintain order.

Hayat had also ordered police officers in November 2024 to refrain from participating in political activities amid the protests of Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI).

Its elimination follows months of federal criticisms about the management of the law and order of KP.

The establishment division has begun the list of candidates for the new head of the FIA, while a formal notification confirming the appointment of Hameed as KP IG.
