Even a slight Covid-19 infection can promote obstructed arteries, which in turn increases the risk of heart attack in some people, indicates a new study.
Covid-19 virus infection is associated with the rapid growth of the plate in arteries that are integral to supply blood to the heart muscle, also called coronary arteries, the researchers wrote in a new study published in the magazine, Radiology.
To get worse, the researchers found a plaque in the arteries of those whose COVID-19 was not even serious enough to require hospitalization.
They also believe that inflammation that comes with infectious respiratory disease is probably the reason behind the growth of the arterial plate.
“Inflammation after COVID-19 can lead to continuous growth of the plaque, particularly high-risk and non-calcified plates,” said Cardiology director at the Zhongshan hospital, Fudan University and Senior researcher, Dr. Junbo Ge .
“It is crucial to anticipate a heavier cardiovascular patient load in the future, since most infected people recover from acute Sars-COV-2 infection,” GE added.
“Patients with SARS-COV-2 infection have a higher risk of myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome and stroke for up to one year,” GE said.
