- Bybit confirms to suffer a great cyber attack
- Computer pirates stole approximately $ 1.5 billion in Ethereum
- His identities are not confirmed, but researchers speculate that it was Lázaro
One of the greatest exchanges of cryptocurrencies in the world has suffered a devastating cyber attack in which he lost approximately $ 1.5 billion in Ethereum.
The company’s CEO, Ben Zhou, confirmed the attack against Bybit, who said that the threat actors diverted the reserves of the exchange and not the funds of the clients.
Although this is the greatest robbery in the history of Crypto, Zhou pointed out that the company is still solvent and does not have an existential threat, and praised the great players of the industry, who joined behind the victims and offered help .
Lazarus
The attack itself was quite sophisticated. Bybit maintained ETH in a multiple folder wallet, a method that is considered as safe as possible. It also means that to move funds, several people would need to sign the transaction.
Apparently, the attackers somehow managed to compromise all the employees involved in the transfer of funds, and when the company wanted to remove cold storage funds to a “hot wallet” to support their daily activities, the attackers could redirect the funds.
All the people involved never knew what happened, because in their monitors, all the information is verified.
The news sent shock waves throughout the cryptosphere. Hundreds of thousands of people started withdrawals from their Bybit money, for fear that the company could not serve everyone (as was the case of Celsius in 2021). Ethereum fell approximately 4% in the news.
For the first time, in the face of extremely bad news, the cryptographic industry showed incredible resistance. In general, news as they would send not only Ethereum, but also Bitcoin, and with them most other coins falling, eliminating a significant part of their value in a matter of hours. However, Ethereum lost “only” 4% (which is almost insignificant in the cryptographic world) and recovered relatively fast. Bybit served all its clients during the “bank execution”, and continues to operate normally.
The identity of the attackers is not yet confirmed, although some researchers believe that this is the work of Lazarus, an infamous threat actor sponsored by the state of North Korea. In fact, Lázaro is known for attacking cryptographic businesses and, being on the payroll of North Korea, definitely has the means to achieve a robbery like this.
