- Microsoft completes its EU data limit project
- EU cloud data will now be stored in the EU
- Goal previously received a fine from the EU to store data in the US.
Microsoft Cloud customers in the EU can now store and process their data within the continent after the company finally completed an important project.
In an ad, Microsoft said that its new EU data limits project will mean that customers can now store professional services data of “technical support interactions” for Core cloud services within the EFA and EU.
Previously, Microsoft Cloud customers received their data from the US, which raised EU privacy problems.
Greater control
The announcement is the completion of a “massive and several years” project, to meet Microsoft’s objectives to provide a solution that processes and stores customer data.
It will include, “customer data and pseudonymized personal data for Microsoft Core Cloud Services, including Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Power Platform and most of the Azure services, within the EU and ECA regions.”
The project was initially launched in January 2023, with the first phase focused on central services. Phase 2 extended the scope of the EU data limit to include “pseudonymized personal data”, and now in this final phase, Microsoft Cloud sovereignty offers customers more control, transparency and responsibility through principles of European clouds.
Microsoft says it has invested more than $ 20 billion in the cloud infrastructure to meet the growing demand and “expand local options.”
EU regulators have previously expressed concerns about how Microsoft processes data from cloud service users, and Microsoft is not the only objective. Goal received a giant fine of $ 1.3 billion, and was ordered to stop transferring EU data to the US.
The requirement to stop the storage of personal data of EU people would be a “mass commitment to carry out, financially and logistically,” said Nigel Jones, co -founder of the privacy compliance center, so it is not surprising that this Microsoft project took two years to complete.
