For the first time in his NFL career, Brock Purdy will have a different quarterback coach.
The San Francisco 49ers announced their coaching staff for the 2025 season on Tuesday, and Brian Griese was not in the staff as a field marshal coach.
The reason for Griese’s absence of the coaching staff is because he decided to finish his career as a coach after three seasons, according to San Francisco Chronicle.

Griese, 49, was instrumental in the drawing of the 49ers, Purdy, since he gave the former field marshal of the state of Iowa its maximum qualification of all quarterbacks in the 2022 draft, despite being the last selection of the Draft.
Griese and then Field Marshals coach Klay Kubiak spoke with Purdy through Zoom in an interview prior to the Draft.
“I know we value the fact that Brock was selfless,” Griese said through San Francisco Chronicle. “It was humble. Relationships cared. It can be said quite fast if a field marshal is about lifting other people around him. Or if it’s it.”
In addition to his disinterest and leadership, Griese also thought very well about Purdy’s precision.
Griese almost moved away after his first training season, but after weighing family considerations, he decided to return.

Now, two seasons after thinking initially, Griese has left the team.
Griese let a chief training interview with the New York Jets for his vacancy coach at the beginning of this low season, and now makes sense why the interview was skipped.
The 49ers promoted Mick Lombardi, a senior offensive assistant with the team last year, to the field marshal coach. Lombardi was the offensive coordinator of Los Vegas Raiders for two seasons.
Griese played at the NFL for 11 seasons, winning a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos in 1999. Griese also did the Pro Bowl in 2000.
Throughout his 11-year-old career, Griese had 83 career openings and it was 45-38, launching for 19,440 yards with 119 Touchdowns and 99 interceptions in his career.

After his career as a player, Griese was an ESPN analyst for 12 seasons and joined the 49ers coaching staff directly from the stand.
The 49ers hesitated last season, going 6-11 and lasted at the NFC West after making the Super Bowl the previous season.
The team will resort to Purdy to help design a change, but the field marshal will have to do without Griese beside him.
