The regional reference laboratory for the eradication of polyomyelitis at the National Institute of Health has confirmed a case of polyomyelitis of the Thatta District, Sindh, which marked the fourth case of this type in the province and the sixth case in Pakistan by the year 2025, according to the Eradication Promgramme website of Pakistan’s polyomyelitis.
This comes as part of a growing concern for the persistence of polyomyelitis in certain regions of the country. Last year, 74 cases of polio were reported in Pakistan, and most come from Baluchistan (27 cases) and Sindh (23 cases). Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa reported 22 cases, while Punjab and Islamabad reported one case.
The polio is still a paralyzing disease that causes paralysis and has no cure. Vaccination, especially for children under five years of age, is the most effective way to prevent the spread of the virus.
Health authorities emphasize the importance of completing the complete vaccination program to guarantee high immunity in children, particularly in regions as a Sindh, where cases have been more frequent.
The Polyomyelitis program has been actively implementing vaccination campaigns throughout Pakistan, and the first national polio campaign of 2025 reached more than 45 million children earlier this month.
In addition, a specific campaign in the Quetta and Karachi division took place from February 20 to 28, 2025, where around 900,000 children received injectable and oral polio vaccines for an additional impulse of additional immunity.
These efforts are part of the great recovery initiative, which is being implemented by the Expanded Immunization program to immunize children against 12 preventable children’s diseases.
In an attempt to address the possible cross -border transmission, a specific vaccination activity was carried out in 104 trade union tips near Afghanistan or those organizing populations of Afghan refugees. More than 600,000 children were vaccinated in this high -risk region.
The Polyomyelitis program is asking parents to make sure their children are vaccinated against polyomyelitis, which stresses that every vaccination opportunity has the fight to eradicate the virus and prevent more cases of paralysis.
Previously, Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its $ 500 million commitment to the global polio eradication initiative (GPEI), aimed at eradicating wild polio and controlling polio outbreaks derived from the vaccine in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced Monday.
