Government moves to the rhythm of Tortoise on climate authority: SC

Islamabad:

The Supreme Court rebuked the government on Friday for its slow progress.

A Constitutional Bank of five members headed by Judge Aminuddin Khan heard a request on the delay in the establishment of the Climate Change Authority, where the court raised concerns about the prolonged delay in appointing the president of the authority and the questionable selection of its members.

The bank included Judge Jamal Commandkhail, Judge Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Judge Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Judge Shahid Bilal Hasan.

“The government should move at the speed of a cheey, but crawls like a turtle,” Judge Jamal Commandkhail observed.

During the hearing, the additional attorney general (AAG) informed the court that the Government had issued a third announcement for the president’s position.

“Why did the first two ads fail?” Judge Commandkhail questioned.

The AAG explained that among the three preselected candidates, it was discovered that the best classified candidate had dual nationality, which disqualified him according to government policy.

“If you are looking for an exceptionally high -level candidate, some commitments should be made,” Judge Commandkhail said, changing the approach to the provincial operations of the authority. “The real problem is at the provincial level. How will this authority work there?”

The AAG replied that provincial members have already been appointed.

However, Judge Aminuddin said that Faisal Amin, the member of the KP climate change authority, is the brother of the provincial principal minister.

Meanwhile, the Baluchistan representative is a university vice chancellor without experience in climatic problems, and bureaucrats have been appointed from Punjab and Sindh.

Judge Commandkhail criticized the selections and said: “I personally know the Baluchistan representative. He has no experience in this field.”
