- The NYU website was recently disfigured to show data alleging racism at the university
- The files presented confidential information to millions of students
- The Ti team of the University Mitigó the attack in three hours
A piracy group that is called “Computer Niggy Exploitation” has reached the website of the University of New York (NYU) in an attempt to expose the alleged racism of the university, but has also exposed confidential information to millions of applicants of the NYU.
The NYU website was disfigured, and instead of the usual home page, it showed three graphics that show what the group claims to be the SAT scores admitted by NYU, ACT scores and GPA for cycle 2024-2025.
The Group recalled that the Supreme Court killed the “affirmative action” in 2023, but the NYU “continued anyway”, and that the data shows that the average admitted test scores and the GPA for Asian and Caucasian applicants were higher, compared to Hispanic and black applicants.
Confidential data leaks
Affirmative action is a policy designed to promote opportunities for historically marginalized groups, particularly in education and employment, considering factors such as race or gender in admissions and hiring decisions.
In the US, the Supreme Court effectively ended the affirmative action based on the breed in university admissions on June 29, 2023, with its ruling in students for fair admissions v. Harvard and students for fair admissions v. North Carolina University.
But this is where it worsens even more. The four CSV files to which they were accessible on the website revealed NYU admission data since 1989, including 3 million applications for admitted students, demographic data, cities, postal codes and citizens. In addition, the CSV also showed common application data with information such as rejected students, financial aid, early decision students and information about brothers and parents.
The record He says that the group tried to write the archives so that the students could not be identified, but failed, according to Zack Ganot, one of the people who execute Databreach.com. Complete names, addresses, telephone numbers, graduate averages, email addresses, were exposed.
Ganot loaded the database to their platform, allowing students to verify if their information leaked. You can find more details here.
The disfiguration lasted approximately two hours, after which the University’s team of the University managed to recover control.
