A fan of the Cleveland Guardians was expelled from Sunday’s game after a gardener from the Boston Jarren Duran Red Sox, who had been open about a suicide attempt three years ago.

The team said the fan said “something inappropriate” towards Duran after it flew in the seventh entry of a 13-3 victory over the Guardians. He was at the top of the bench and looked at the fan while the rest of the entrance continued. Then he was expelled when baseball staff and progressive field security handled the situation.

The fan tried to escape running down the hall, but was caught and removed from the stadium.

“We are aware of the situation that took place during today’s game between a fan and one of the players of the Red Sox who violated our fan behavior policy,” the guardians said in a statement after the game. “We recognize the seriousness of the behavior in question here and we take the behavior of this nature very seriously.

“We apologize with the organization of the red socks, the player involved, the fans in the area and we are addressing the situation. We have identified the fan in question and we will work with the major baseball leagues with respect to the next steps. We strive to provide the best experience to the visiting players and fans, and that fell short today.”

Duran, whose suicide attempt was revealed in the Netflix documentary “The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox,” he talked about the incident.

“Fans have just said something inappropriate. I am happy that security would handle it and that the referees knew and cared for it,” he said.

“When you open like this, you also open the enemies. But I have a good support staff around me, teammates, coaches. There were fans who supported me, so that was incredible.”
