- France has accused a group of Russian piracy from French attacking companies
- It is said that the spying group has reached at least 12 organizations
- Geopolitical tensions are exacerbating the problem
The French Foreign Ministry has published a statement that accuses the Russian cyber -cyber spying group APT28 (also known as Fancy Bear) of being behind at least a dozen infractions of French entities in the last four years, reports Bleeping Computer.
These attacks include incidents aimed at defense companies, government agencies and groups of experts. The French Foreign Ministry argues that they are destined to destabilize the State: a tactic that Russia has repeatedly used against the EU and NATO states, especially since the invasion of Ukraine.
France calls these “unacceptable” and “unworthy intrusions of a permanent member of the UN Security Council.”
Constant pressure
“Since 2021, this modus operandi (MOA) has been used to attack or commit around ten French entities. These entities are key actors in the life of French citizens: public services, private services and a sports organization linked to the organization of 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” confirms the statement (transferred by Google).
The statement warns that France and its allies will use all means at their disposal to “anticipate the malicious behavior of Russia in cyberspace, discourage and respond to it if necessary.”
It has been observed that Russia’s APT28 group attacked innocent companies to access their neighbors before, exploiting the nearby Wi-Fi networks to force the entrance. Geopolitics plays a very important role in the motivations of these attacks, and given the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and the increase in tensions worldwide, these attacks are unlikely to slow down in the short term.
“APT28 is also used to exert constant pressure on the Ukrainian infrastructure in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, particularly when operating by Unit 20728 of Gru. The numerous European partners have also been attacked by APT28 in recent years. As such, the EU has sanctions imposed on the people and entities of the attacks that carry out this modus Operandi, said the operated.
