Phil Simms, the legendary Marshal of Campo de los Gigantes de New York, and his family have been struggling with the notion of letting the team’s first round, Abdul Carter, use his retreat shirt No. 11.
While Simms himself said he would be open to let Carter use the same number he was carrying in Penn State, his family’s women finally closed it.
Chris Simms, Phil’s son and current NBC analyst at the NBC, broke the debate within his family circle in “Pft Live With Mike Florio” on Monday, when he said that “spilling tears” really came for his sister, Deidre and her mother, Diana.

After Simms made his comments about being open to let No. 11 went to Carter, Chris received a phone call with his father, asking if he was really going to make it real reality.
However, Deidre called and could not believe that Chris was on his father’s side.
“‘I thought you were going to be on my side, how you dare. Forget it, I don’t want to talk to you and we are hanging,” said Chris Deidre told him on the phone.

“That was when I knew: ‘Uh, Oh, mom and sister have get involved here.’ And mom and sister have a vote more than me and me (Matt), and I don’t know where my brother is in this.”
Chris said his father asked him if he could influence his mother and sister by his side. However, Chris was right: Simms’ votes had more power at the end.
“I knew they fit,” Chris said. “I think he goes to the point where there was literally like, they were shedding tears. I am not trying to embarrass my mother or my sister, but that is the important thing that was for them. And besides that, the setback of that and the number of people who arrived in my father, ‘You do not give your number, do not do that,’ I think it was a bit discarded by that.

“Ultimately, he will not do it, he was overcome by his family, specifically his daughter and his wife, but that’s where he is at this time.”
Carter, who was third in general in the NFL 2025 draft, has caused some controversy that revolves around the shirt number he wants to use. Lawrence Taylor, the fame hall supporter whose 56 retired was raised by Carter, told the rookie to make his own number famous.
It was then that Carter turned to number 11, which Phil said openly that he would consider giving him. Now, however, Carter will have to find his own number like any other player.
Trivial seems to believe that a rookie could take a retired number, but it has recently happened in the NFL, even with the giants last season. Malik Nabers obtained permission from Ray Flaherty’s family to use No. 1, and did it well last year.

In addition, in this year’s Draft class, Warren Moon gave Cam Ward, the number one general selection, the right to use his number 1 retired with the Tennessee Titans. Of course, Moon has the right to give his number if so.
While Jersey numbers generally have no weight for rookies, the NFL world is now obsessed with what Carter will now do that both requests have been denied.
