- Nintendo President Shutaro Furukawa says that the high price of switch 2 is a factor for the sales prognosis of the company of 15 million units of the company
- Furukawa says that the limits for hardware production capacity and American tariffs were not a factor
- Nintendo also hopes to sell 45 million units in the Switch 2 software, excluding copies of Mario de Mario Kart included in Switch 2 Bundles
Nintendo President Shutaro Furukawa said the lowest sales prediction for the Nintendo Switch 2 is due to the high price of the console.
After his financial report last week, where Nintendo said he hoped to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles during his launch window last week (through VGC), investors have asked the company why he has predicted lower sales than some analysts anticipated.
“We are predicting Nintendo Switch 2 hardware sales of 15 million units for this fiscal year,” Furukawa said in a new one published today. “We established this figure with the aim of reaching the same level of sales that we achieved with Nintendo Switch in the period of approximately 10 months between its launch in March 2017 and December of that year.”
Furukawa also said that the high cost of the console of $ 449.99 / £ 395.99 is a key factor in its predictions, but that its compatibility and software packages will increase sales before the end of the first fiscal year.
“Nintendo Switch 2 has a relatively high price compared to Nintendo Switch, so we recognize that there are corresponding challenges for early adoption,” said Nintendo president. “That said, Nintendo Switch 2 can reproduce compatible Nintendo Switch software, so there is continuity between platforms. We are taking measures such as grouping software with hardware to accelerate adoption in the first fiscal year, with the aim of going to the same beginning we made with Nintendo Switch.”
Furukawa continued, saying that the limits to hardware production capacity “were not a factor” in their sales prediction, and that the recent increase in US rates or the possibility of recession “also did not affect our prognosis of sales volume.”
“To achieve sales of 15 million units, we will need to manufacture the hardware in older amounts than that. Our first objective is to have the same beginning we made with Nintendo Switch, and we are working to strengthen our production capacity so that we can respond flexiblely to demand,” he added.
After recognizing the positive comments of Nintendo Switch 2 practical events worldwide, before returning to the topic of the high price of the console compared to the original switch, saying that “even if there is an impulse in the launch, we know that it will not be easy to maintain that impulse in motion.”
“We have been working to increase Nintendo Switch 2 hardware production since even before celebrating Nintendo Switch 2 experience and my Nintendo Store applications began. Our sales volume prognosis was not determined depending on any limit for production capacity,” he said.
Nintendo also predicted that he sells 45 million units in the Nintendo Switch 2 software, excluding the Mario de Mario Kart Copies included in Switch 2 Bundles, which would exceed 52 million software units sold for switch in the 10 months after its launch.
It was said that this is partly due to “a more robust alignment” of editors’ games and the availability of switch 2 Edition titles.
Later, Furukawa was asked to confirm the impact of American tariffs expected in the sales forecast after Nintendo was forced to increase the price of some of his next accessories last month.
“Our financial projections were created based on the assumption of American tariffs of 10% in the products produced in Japan, Vietnam and Cambodia, and 145% in China,” he explained, but could not reveal the impact of tariffs on individual products, such as some accessories and amiibo, which occur in China.
“Our basic policy is that for any country or region, if tariffs are imposed, we recognize them as part of the cost and incorporate into the price,” added Furukawa. “On the other hand, the fiscal year that ends in March 2026 is the launch period of our first new video game system dedicated in eight years. If the alleged rates change, we will consider how to handle the situation by taking into account the importance of the impulse of the platform and the growth of the hardware installation base.”
The Nintendo Switch 2 is launched worldwide on June 5, 2025. The early orders and the early orders of the United States are now live.
