New underground step promises trips without signals

The long -awaited GPOWK underground step in Mall Road, Rawalpindi, is scheduled to open traffic on June 30 (tomorrow). Completed in a four -month record, the RS4.6 billion project aims to make the 26 -kilometer malls free of signals and significantly improve traffic flow throughout the city.

With an extension of 1.93 kilometers, the underground step was considered essential to relieve the congestion of chronic traffic, especially during VIP movements. The infrastructure includes 2,025 batteries, 50 beams and a completely built bridge, along with 20 -foot wide service and pedestrian trails on both sides.

Described as an avant -garde initiative, the project represents an important urban update. Once operational, it will guarantee a trip without signals from Saddar to Kacheri, improving the general efficiency of traffic.

While the main construction has been completed, final touches are being made, including paint and installation of computerized digital advertising boards.

As part of the broader beautification plan, landscaping will have decorative herb, flowers and more than 20,000 trees, including fruits varieties and that come from shadows, which will be planted during the next monsoon plantation campaign.

The underground step will also be monitored through CCTV surveillance to guarantee public safety. Rawalpindi’s attached commissioner, Hasan Waqar Cheema, described the project as a modern urban planning model, emphasizing that its lighting, landscape and commercial impact will establish a new standard.
