alone at home The director has finally solved the mystery of how Kevin McAllister’s parents were able to afford that majestic house and vacations for their large family.
The five-bedroom, six-bathroom residence in Winnetka, Illinois, featured in the Christmas movie has been the center of debate for fans since the film was released in 1990.
However, director Chris Columbus has now revealed what Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin’s parents did to earn such a good living.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporteryes Awards talk On the podcast, Columbus said, “Back then, John and I had a conversation about it and decided what the jobs were.”
Kevin’s mother, Kate McCallister (played by Catherine O’Hara), “was a very successful fashion designer,” which the director said was implied by the presence of mannequins in the basement of the house.
He couldn’t remember what John Heard’s Peter McCallister did, saying: “The father might have worked, in John Hughes’ own experience, in advertising, but I don’t remember what he did.”
He then clarified that Peter had no ties to organized crime, which some fans theorized was the reason Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern’s Wet Bandits were targeting his house.
“It is not organized crime, although at that time there was a lot of organized crime in Chicago,” Christopher Columbus clarified.
